Spring is in the Air
Spring is in the air…I just hope Mother Nature is paying attention and doesn’t surprise us with a tantrum. I was outside today and noticed that my hyacinth were coming up. I hope the elk don’t notice also. Someone told me to plant garlic and the elk and moles will leave things alone. I’m going to give it a try this year. The elk aren’t as hungry as they were last year. I love Spring!!
It seems that our Cougar has moved on. I don’t have a problem with that. She just about got everything she could reach. Yesterday, the ducks decided to go to the pond for a dip and I worried all day. Last night they were all accounted for…there’s only 2 left but they are giving me eggs every day and I would kind of like to keep them. They are both named Cracker and seem to know their name and come running when I call them. How can you not love a duck?
This week we have 2 batches of baby rabbits due. I’m so excited because I didn’t even get to see the last batch until this last week. They are still cute, but not like the younger ones are. We did the cage shuffle getting the last batch out away from Mama (who, by the way, wasn’t happy with us grabbing her babies) and got the nest boxes in place for the event. Lumpy had to move out of the main rabbit house to make room. He is such a cuddler. How can you not love a rabbit?
We also have our first batch of baby chicks due this week. And there is another hen who is acting very hormonal, so she’s getting ready. The problem with that is that I don’t know where her nest is and can’t replace her eggs with big chicken eggs. I don’t need any more banty roosters hanging around.
The two turkeys are still laying eggs. I guess I will have to let them hatch out chicken eggs too because they are so ready to nest. Next year we will have turkey babies from our own turkeys. This year we will have to buy turkey babies to raise. I’m disappointed, but can wait one more year. It’s kind of nice not to have a gobler around to chase us. We will keep one from our new babies to father next years batches.
Rick and I are meeting with his social worker/counsellor tomorrow. He graduates from his outpatient classes on Wednesday. I’m sure we are going to have a good report because he is doing so well. It’s been a long haul, and things are beginning to get back to our “new normal”. I’m thinking that they are going to release him to go ahead and go job hunting for at least part time work. He started driving last week and seems to be ready to move on. The medications are balancing him out and he handling the everyday stuff pretty well. How can you not love a Rickster?
I am pretty much back to my old routine. It’s hard not to overdue. I’m able to just about do anything except for heavy lifting. Yesterday, I overdid it and paid the piper all night with pain. I’m hardly taking any of the narcotics that I was having to take. I actually can put two thoughts together. I’m glad that is behind me.
The snow is leaving us rapidly now. There is still a foot in some places, but also bare ground in others. I’m not sure why it doesn’t melt evenly. It’s dirty and very inconvient. I’m ready to start digging in the garden and can’t yet.
That’s about the update. Thanks for all the cards and phone calls to Rick during his recuperation. It helped more than you know.
Have a great day!!!
