My mother passed away on December 27, 1999.  There were two things I remember her loving and that was the deer that were constantly in the yard (mainly because they always were fed when they came here) and the flowers in her garden and yard.  Because she fed the deer they also would eat her flowers, so my father had a section fenced off close to the house that she kept a small garden and lots of flowers.  It overlooked the pond and wheel house and was always very nice to look at with that as a back drop.
When I moved in, I fed the deer for a couple of years.  There was one which I called Sarah, who would come up to me when I picked apples to steal them out of my buckets and also would eat them out of my hands.  It took years for me to build that kind of trust with her.  That happened in the fall and when hunting season came along all the deer were killed except for Sarah’s two fawns.  I decided at that time not to feed the deer anymore, as it just made them unafraid of humans and therefore they were too easy to kill.  Besides that, it broke my heart when there were no more deer meeting me at the door every morning waiting for their handout.
Back to the flowers….I have taken down the fences now, but every spring my Mom’s crocus, tulips, and daffodils come up in the lawn to remind me of days past when she puttered in these flower beds.  Each spring we mow around them until they are spent and consider moving them to another spot.  But each year we decide to leave them for a reminder of her again next year.
Tina took a picture of them for me this spring and I thought I would share.
Have a great day!!!
